Season 8 Auditions (Videos)
The worst and funniest of 2009
Format:
In addition to having a 4th judge this season (Kara DioGuardi – songwriter/singer), there will be some changes in the format:
- Following the auditions will be the Hollywood week rounds (2 weeks of airtime – Feb 3,4 and Feb 10).
- On Feb 11 (Wed), instead of the usual Top 24 contestants, this time around, 36 semi-finalists will be selected from the Hollywood round contestants. These 36 contestants will be split up into 3 semi-finalists groups of 12 contestants each group.
- 3 weeks of performances (Feb 17, Feb 24, Mar 3) by each semi-finalist group will follow. Voting every week will select 3 finalists from the 12 semifinalists group each week: Top-voted male and female contestants and the contestant with the next highest votes.
- So, after 3 weeks, you have 9 finalists determined by nation-wide voting.
- Here’s where the Wild Card introduced this season comes in. On Mar 5, Judges choose a bunch of their favourite contestants who weren’t voted into the finals. These contestants perform and based on their performance, 3 of them are wild-carded into the finalists group to make a neat Top 12 Contestants.
- These Top 12 contestants are voted off every week as usual to arrive at the American Idol Season 8 Winner
