David Cook American Idol Song Always Be My Baby: Mariah Carey Theme Top 7

Watch David Cook, Top 7 Season 7 2008 contestant, sing the Mariah Carey song Always Be My Baby. I hadn’t heard the original Mariah song – so I went and did so. Listen to the original here. This is the kind of arrangement I’ve been waiting to hear – a David Cook original arrangement. I thought the judges went a little overboard with their praise, but that’s more a testament to the ordinariness of the night. There’s some crap talk going around that this is a rip off of the Goo Goo Dolls Iris, but there’s hardly anything that I can hear of Iris in this – maybe the strings arrangement for about a couple of seconds when the tempo picks up towards the end, but that’s absolute nitpicking. I wasn’t crazy about the vocals though – sounded a bit flat on the bass notes to me. But what does it matter. David Cook has brushed aside last week.

This has always been a favorite song of mine so the new arrangement made me really nervous since I love love love David Cook. The stupid whiny buzz about and Iris rip off is totally uncalled for. If you listen to the original, the strings in that section are dead on from the original, just moved into a minor key to fit the arrangement. If there was anything wrong with Eleanor Rigby, it was on the head of FOX and AI not David Cook. For that matter I’ve listened to both and hear some similarity that should definitely be credited, but that is the job of AI’s LEGION of lawyers– not David Cook. For that matter, the tiny un-known band should thank it’s lucky stars that David wanted to do a rock version of that song and put them on the friggin’ map with a performance that was 100 times better than the one on their myspace page.
