To start with, American Idol was created by Simon Fuller (who has managed the Spice Girls and Annie Lennox among others) as a follow up to the successful British show, Pop Idol in which Simon Cowell was a judge.
Apart from being the most well known among the 3 judges of American Idol, Simon Cowell also judges other talent shows like Pop Idol, The X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent. He was born in Brighton, England to a real estate developer father and ballet dancer mother and inherited Jewish and Scottish genes apart from English.
A victim of frequent bullying, he once told a bunch of bullied British kids whom he had invited over to his office – “It happened to me and my friends too. But it’s the people who are picked on, they are the cool ones.”

From his choice of women, it would appear all those rumours of him being homosexual are unfounded and stem mainly from his mannerisms, typical of many British males, that tend to be confused by foreigners as being gay. However, conspiracy theorists propose that these hot women are just a publicity gimmick to hide his closet. Sinitta was incidentally his first discovery who went on to sell 900,000 records.
American Idol viewers often tend to agree with the judgement he passes on contestants and his opinion is widely respected often being instrumental in a contestant’s fate. In Idol Season 7, however, Alaina Whitaker was eliminated the week after Simon Cowell called her the dark horse of the competition. He seems to have become so seasoned and sure of his abilities that it’s almost like he walks into the Idol recordings, does his job and then walks out without giving another thought to the show or contestants until the next week’s recording.
The talents he has backed and unearthed include Westlife, Five, Curiosity Killed The Cat, Robson & Jerome (whom he hounded for several months and at one stage faced lawsuits from them thanks to his incessant badgering. Eventually the British TV actor duo had three No 1 singles and two No 1 albums). However, he has famously also rejected Take That and the Spice Girls.

Cowell may or may not be gay, but Sinitta admitted they never once had sexual relations during their supposed love affair.
Nor is his decidedly camp and waspish demeanour “typically male-British”, except in ludicrous Hollywood stereotypes.
