It’s almost like Syesha Mercado sat there wondering on the eve of song selection when she got to know it was Parton night, until she found a lifeline in a Whitney Houston cover. It was too obvious a thing to do and as the judges (Simon is notorious when it comes to his Whitney affinity) pointed out, you can never top the Whitney version which is essentially what it sounded like, despite claims at the start of the video that suggested otherwise. Vocally powerful and very good, but something tells me it’s not going to be good enough. Is it that high note right at the end that was stretched long enough to lose its charm?
